Think they should get the cap relief. Though kind of feel like the contracts should still be tracked while they are on IRL teams books. What about just adding a couple “official” LTIR roster designations that can be used at any time. Owners won’t be handcuffed waiting for the start of season when LTIR can be applied IRL or by teams using these contracts as cap circumvention (‘zona)

Yes - I can see the in real life "LTIR" (long term injured reserve) becoming more common over the next few years and I don't think our current set of rules is clear enough after seeing dicussions on a couple of players that it relates to. AND with more of those pre-current CBA contracts getting close to years 9, 10 etc... (eg. Luongo, Weber, etc...) more players are not "officially" retiring due to cap implications on their IRL clubs.
Give me a bit of time to think how to rectify this and I'll compose an email and voting poll so we can work to clear up this grey area. If you have any thoughts on this please post here.

Noted Voodoo; I think there is genuine concern for this growing IRL trend and how it can affect leagues like ours. I'm looking at this as an issue that can affect all 31 teams when an IRL player doesn't file his retirement papers with his previous club. It provides a benefit to a IRL situation, but in Fantasy it really doesn't and it hamstrings a GM who is dealt with type of situation. Couple that with how "grey" the retirement part of our rulebook is and generally GMs have to use up a valuable IR spot or use their amnesty needlessly. Since this league strives to mimic the IRL NHL as closely as possible, I think it's fair and within reason to adopt a plan to introduce LTIR in some capacity. So far I've had some PM feedback, and includeing yours and TB's notes all are in support of something LTIR related.
I do agree with maybe having it. Zetterberg is all but done for good, but didn't "retire" formally as of yet. I'm not sure on specifics, but would be open to discuss and definitely have something in place.
