Hes on long term injury reserve. Same situation as Hossa He has 3 years left on his contract that he will be collecting, so will need to go on IR.

o If a player retires, no penalty is applied to a contract that is an IRL contract. If the deal is a SCD signed deal, the team is responsible for half to the contract salary and the remaining term of the deal

As to when it's effectuive, it's really up to all 31 of you GMs.
