There have been some great and intriguing discussions dating back to last season related to players who are placed on Long-Term Injury Reserve (LTIR) by “In Real Life” NHL clubs.
Slapshot Central Dynasty (SCD) currently does not have any specific mention or rules regarding players who are placed on in real life LTIR for a whole season. It may be common knowledge that the player will not play that season and perhaps ever again, but they have not filed their “retirement” papers with the NHL so they are technically “active” and their contracts are on the books. These players are in “limbo” as the teams that possess the player’s contracts can capture the contract value to bring the club to the cap floor. This seemingly is a growing trend where some players cannot officially retire due to the huge cap penalty that the IRL clubs have to take on (case in point…..Pronger, Clarkson, Savard, Hossa, etc..) and now more coming up now and in the future like Zetterberg, Weber, MacArthur, Luongo, etc… In most cases, you can thank those front loaded 12-year contracts that were offered prior to the current Collective Bargaining Agreement and by nothing “retiring” the player, IRL teams circumvent the cap penalty. In my mind, this is a really bad stroke of luck to GMs that have these hurt players.
I’ve consulted with two leagues that I know of that have LTIR in their rulebooks and have come up with a potential solution for SCD going forward. To amend/clear up this “grey” area of the rulebook and adopt an LTIR strategy where all 31 teams can gain instant cap relief for having a player that qualifies as being LTIR eligible, I propose the following:
· Each SCD team can have a limit of ONE LTIR eligible player for 2018/19 season (adding spot(s) can be discussed for future SCD seasons if need be).
· The team that owns a player who is on in real life LTIR can apply to have the whole contract off the books for that season only.
· Should the player have more than one season remaining on the contract, an application needs to be made at the start of each successive season until the contract has ended.
· Proof needs to be provided that a player is on LTIR (easiest way to find that is to refer to capfriendly.com and look up the IRL team page who owns the player on LTIR). A separate folder will be set up and the requesting GM needs to provide the link in the posting. I will acknowledge the update of the transaction in that posting and that’s all that needs to be done by the requesting GM. E.g. Marian Hossa ->Vegas GM Andy owns this player. He will look up the Arizona Coyotes on capfriendly.com and he’ll see the “LTIR” designation applied to Hossa. Andy would copy that weblink into a posting and states that he wishes to apply for LTIR for Marian Hossa for the current season.
All 31 teams currently have 5 IR spots…teams that have a player on LTIR can have a 6th one added by League Management. In the SCD Master the player on LTIR will be separately noted and his contract will be removed from the team cap total so other players can be brought in. This player is also still a tradeable asset and doesn't have to be LTIRed by the acquiring GM. Once a player is placed on LTIR he stays there for the season.
I will put this out for a league-wide vote with three options:
1. Yes - enact this change effective 2018/19 Season
2. Yes - enact this change effective 2019/20 Season
3. No – the retirement system is fine as is
I will abstain from the vote unless results end in a tie. Should there be a tie, my vote will be the tie-breaker.
Please vote ASAP – I would like to have a result for Sunday evening if at all possible with a minimum of 2/3s of our league voting.
Cheers,
Beamer
